Violence in the home includes:

  • physical harm
  • emotional manipulation
  • unreasonable criticism & demeaning comments
  • financial control
  • restricting freedom to come and go
  • sexual violation
  • or threats to carry out any of the above

It is an undisputed fact that violence in the home is now a major problem in Australia. It’s estimated that 25% of marriages or de facto relationships experience domestic violence.

What is domestic violence?

Domestic or family violence, as it is sometimes known, happens when one person in an intimate relationship engages in behaviour that causes harm or even fear in the other partner.

It affects not only the victim but children, family members and friends, employers and co-workers.

Witnessing violence in the home endangers the emotional well-being of children. They develop an understanding that violence is a normal way of resolving conflict.

Victims may blame themselves and try to dismiss partners’ behaviour but there is no excuse for domestic violence.

Dating violence is another unacceptable form of behaviour affecting intimate relationships.

If you believe that you are in an abusive relationship, counselling may assist you.

An appointment may be made for a one hour face to face counselling session if you live in the Brisbane area or a 45 minute telephone session from anywhere in Australia.
