What is mindfulness?
Mindfulness is about being 'present' to each new moment as it happens...pleasurable moments, fun times, even tough times.
When we consciously hold attention in the present moment without judgement we are learning to exercise the 'mindfulness muscle'. Like all workouts this takes practice and discipline.
Yet, the benefits are potentially immense. Mindfulness helps us to face difficult times with a courageous heart, and respond rather than react to people or life events that upset us. With practice we develop the capacity to look beyond these difficult moments to those parts of our lives that have the capacity to give us great joy.
Mindfulness is an innate ability that we all have - though if you're a little out of practice, Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction may help!
What is Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction?
MBSR is a psycho-educational course that uses mindfulness meditation to help people tap into their inner psychological resources to take better care of themselves.Developed by Dr Jon Kabat-Zinn (UMASS Medical Center) in 1979, MBSR is a mix of mindfulness training, formal and informal meditation practice, mindful movement and gentle yoga, and small group reflection. It is not a requirement to have had prior experience in either meditation or yoga. However this may be helpful.
What does the MBSR course entail?
Prior to signing up for the 8-week course participants are introduced to their MBSR teacher at an informal one-on-one intake meeting. In this session participants are invited to share their expectations about MBSR, and will also learn about programme requirements including a commitment to home practice.
Each weekly MBSR session participants are progressively taught how to cultivate mindfulness and to incorporate it seamlessly into daily life. They also acquire an understanding of stress physiology, a deeper awareness of their own stress response in everyday life, and learn how to use mindfulness when stress arises - whether in their external environment or through an internal process such as a difficult thought or feeling.
Who may benefit from MBSR?
MBSR may benefit anyone experiencing stress that won't go away, chronic pain or uncomfortable levels of anxiety, fear, depression or grief. It may also soothe a sense of spiritual emptiness, or confusion and doubt about the direction of one's life journey.
