Special Mindfulness Training for Carers

and Health Care Industry Workers

AKEM offers a workplace mindfulness programme for carers and those working in community, general and mental health, counselling and education.

The training, 'Mindfulness as a Self-Care and Support Strategy'  introduces mindfulness practices to assist in developing respectful workplace relationships, managing conflict, and in indentifying and addressing workplace stress, so-called 'compassion fatigue' and the effects

of getting unconsciously caught up in the stories of our

clients and patients.

Using mindfulness can assist us to be more 'present' and engaged in what we do. With practice it can help us to

improve the ability to cope more effectively with stressful situations in the workplace in the short and long term.

What is mindfulness?

Mindfulness is about being 'present' to each new moment as it happens...pleasurable moments, fun times, even tough times.

When we consciously hold attention in the present moment without judgement we are learning to exercise the 'mindfulness muscle'. Like all workouts this takes practice and discipline.

Yet, the benefits are potentially immense. Mindfulness helps us to face difficult times with a courageous heart, and respond rather than react to people or life events that upset us. With practice we develop the capacity to look beyond these difficult moments to those parts of our lives that have the capacity to give us great joy.

Mindfulness is an innate ability that we all have - though if you're a little out of practice, Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction may help!

What is Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction?

MBSR is a psycho-educational course that uses mindfulness meditation to help people tap into their inner psychological resources to take better care of themselves.

Developed by Dr Jon Kabat-Zinn (UMASS Medical Center) in 1979, MBSR is a mix of mindfulness training, formal and informal meditation practice, mindful movement and gentle yoga, and small group reflection. It is not a requirement to have had prior experience in either meditation or yoga. However this may be helpful.

Through the eight session programme participants are taught progressively how to both experience and develop mindfulness, and how to incorporate it effortlessly into daily life. An essential part of MBSR is the willingness to attend all sessions, and to undertake regular home practice.

MBSR may benefit anyone experiencing stress that won't go away, chronic pain or uncomfortable levels of anxiety or grief. It may also soothe a sense of spiritual emptiness or confusion and doubt about the direction of one's life journey.
