Alison Keane Educating in Mindfulness offers a unique mindfulness programme for South East Queensland secondary schools.
Breathing Space is a programme for Years 11 & 12 using mindfulness as a core skill to:
. lessen stress and generalised feelings of anxiety
. improve academic focus and performance
. expand interpersonal awareness
. promote psycho-social wellbeing
It is currently available in workshop format or as a 'Focus Day' presentation.
However Breathing Space can be adapted to meet your college or school's time and curriculum requirements.
In particular, Breathing Space teaches teenagers practical and healthy ways to take responsibility for their study load, their relationships, their lives generally and to safely manage stresses associated with these final years of school.
This supportive programme includes formal and informal meditation training, somatic or body awareness exercises, gentle yoga, self-reflection and some didactic learning and group process.
Final year stress may include elevated exam anxiety, feelings of being overwhelmed, depression, substance abuse, unreported bullying, undisclosed eating disorders, and even the rollercoaster emotions associated with family breakdown.
Skills learnt within the programme may be called on not only when things get tough during the teenage years but later in adult life as a way of handling stressful situations.
Breathing Space is available to secondary colleges as a presentation for final year 'Focus Days', longer half day seminars or as a two or four weekly programme. Please enquire what format suits your school or college and whether AKEM can further tailor the programme to suit.
